More than seventy amateur boxers from gyms across the country will be exchanging punches over the next three nights, each ambitious of becoming champions in their respective divisions when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) stages its Intermediate Boxing championships from tonight to Sunday September 18 next.
Among those with their eyes on the title in their respective divisions are Novice bantamweight champion, Mario Gouveia, and light/flyweight champion Antoine Branch, both of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG).
Another pugilist of the same gym, jnr/welterweight Mark Anthony is also aiming to reverse his fortunes after his losing effort in the novice championships earlier this year.
The boxers convened at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue yesterday afternoon for the official weigh in ceremony which precedes the draw. The tournament gets underway this evening, also at the National Gymnasium.
Among the participating gyms are Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE) Guyana Defense Force (GDF), Republicans, Ricola Warriors (RC), Caryll Boxing Gym (CBG) and Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) among several others.
Tournament Director, Terrence Poole supervised the sessions and said that the various boxers would be under surveillance for possible selection at several international engagements throughout the year and leading up to the London Olympics slated for the United Kingdom next year.
The boxing administrator is urging the public to come out and support the boxers since they are all preparing to represent this nation at international tournaments. He reminded that the youngsters would have to perform before large audiences overseas and if they could experience such scenarios during preparations it will serve them well.
Meanwhile, Orlon Rogers, Abid Alli, Gregory Cort and Al Thomas travelled from the Ancient County with a contingent that includes 16 males and 4 females.
The coaches are confident of returning home with several champions. Among the boxers are Novice champion, Joel Williamson who registered a 29secs victory in those championships, Jamal Eastman and 2010 Women’s novice bantamweight champion, Rowinna David. All of the pugilists are spouting confidence and rearing to go.
Following the conclusion of the weigh in ceremony, GABA organisers huddled to match the respective boxers according to their respective weights.
Those selected to battle tonight are required to undergo another weigh in session this morning for fistic duties tonight. Bell time tonight is 20:00hrs.
