Aruwai Mining/D&C Promotions T20 final
New Line Cavaliers (NLC) are the new champions of the Aruwai Mining Inc./D&C Promotions Twenty20 competition following a composed 14 run win over home team Bartica Challengers (BC) in the wee hours of Monday morning at the Bartica Community Centre Ground.
In a gripping final, Bartica won the toss and invited the visitors to take first strike on a wicket that offered encouraging and consistent bounce to the quick bowlers.
Led by Man-of-the-Match Anthony Ifill who cracked 36 (1×6 3×4), Shemroy Barrington 33 (1×6 4×4) and Man-of-the-Series Paul Wintz who hit 26 (1×6 2×4) and extras with 22, NLC posted a challenging 144 all out with 2 balls remaining from their quota of 20 overs.
No other batsman was able to reach double figures with the home team urged on by a vociferous crowd taking wickets at regular intervals.
Barrington and Farouk Hussein (9) added 23 for the 1st wicket before the latter went via the lbw route to the lively Garfield Morris, NLC suffered a mini slump thereafter as 2 quick wickets fell with the score on 24 and 26; Waheid Edwards and Gajanand Singh both falling for a duck to pacer Kurt Welcome who is also known for his exploits in football.
Barrington was then joined by Ifill and the two sought to shore up their teams’ innings taking the score to 61 before Barrington, who was dropped 3 times, finally went lbw to Robert Moore in the 9th over.
Andre Percival who played a cameo in the semi final did not last too long as he was the next to go for 9 comprehensively bowled by Sherwin Murray with the score on 76. Wintz then joined forces with Ifill to lift take their team to 134 before Ifill was run out in unfortunate circumstances, the ball rebounding off the bowler onto the stumps as he {Ifill} was attempting second run.
The remaining 4 wickets did not add much to the score as NLC were bowled out for 144 off 19.4 overs.
Garfield Morris was the leading bowler for Bartica Challengers with 2-16 from 3.4 overs. Welcome had 2-26, Murray 2-28 and Robert Moore 2-29 from 4 overs each with Glen Fredericks taking the other wicket for 12 runs.
With their unbeaten record on the line against the experienced New Line Cavaliers, Bartica Challengers sponsored by Hopkinson Mining chasing 145 to win the top prize of $600,000 sponsored by Aruwai Mining looked solid in their pursuit.
Captain Robin Narine and Arjune Jagroo posted 63 for the first wicket in 8.3 overs before Jagroo went for 30 (1×6 3×4). Narine did not stick around much longer as he joined Jagroo 6 runs later. Thereafter, the only resistance to the NLC attack came from Troy Cornelius 27* and Sherwin Murray 10 as the other batsmen failed to come to grips with the NLC bowlers led by Budhan Baksh who ended with 3-21 from 3 overs, NLC using 7 bowlers to restrict Bartica to 130-8 when their overs expired; extras chipping in with 20. Baksh was ably supported by Percival 2-20 and Wintz 2-35.
The championship trophy and first prize of $600,000 was collected by Andre Percival on behalf of a proud and animated team while the 2nd place prize of $300,000 and trophy went to Bartica Challengers.
The 3rd prize of $100,000 sponsored by Scotia Bank and trophy compliments of Dave went to West Berbice Super Kings. Wintz and Ifill each collected trophies for their respective efforts.
The Organisers, D&C Promotions said they were happy with the level of support they received throughout the tournament from the Business community as well as the support of the players and spectators and other officials.
The competition was run in conjunction with the Bartica Cricket Committee and the Essequibo Cricket Board.
