Ever since he burst onto the scene in the first stage of the 2010 IAAF South American 10km Road Race in Guyana, Nathaniel ‘Brother’ Giddings has been a major force in local distance running, and Sunday he will look to extend his recent excellent form.
The barefooted ‘Brother’ promises to hold no hostages at the Courts 10km Road Race, and will be going out-front again to prove that he is not only the best junior distance runner in the country but also deserving of a high ranking among his senior counterparts.
The Linden-based Giddings went out of his mind on the road two Sundays ago when he opened an early onslaught on an impressive field of athletes along the East Bank. Only national distance ace, Cleveland Forde caught him for a 12-second victory.
In 10km races, 12 seconds can be considered a margin, which proves the kind of form ‘Brother’ is in heading into the Courts 10km Road Race on Sunday. His seasoned senior rivals, Cleveland Thomas and Dennis Horatio were forced to smell his heels.
Just as he had developed in the South American 10km Race here last year, Giddings’s tactics are simple: the athlete goes out with pure pace which forces his opponents under immediate pressure early in the race. To beat ‘Brother’ one has to certainly be fit.
Kaieteur Sport understands that a junior version has been added to the race, but it is likely that a surging Giddings, though he is a junior athlete, will compete among the senior crème de le crème that includes those he had beaten on the East Bank two weeks ago.
In fact, President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce told this newspaper only last week that he will be especially looking to see whether or not Giddings can hold his form to
beat the senior athletes for a second consecutive time on Sunday.
The race will start in front of Courts’ Main Street Branch at 6am. It will then proceed north to the Seawall road, east along the Seawall road and continue east along the Rupert Craig Highway’s northern carriageway to turn at Church Road on the Rupert Craig Highway.
It will then proceed on the Rupert Craig Highway’s southern carriageway into Kitty Public Road; south on Vlissengen Road; west on Lamaha Street, south on the eastern carriageway into Main Street, before turning around at the Cenotaph to finish on the western carriageway of Main Street in front of Courts.
The prizes for the male and female senior category include $100,000 for the winner; $80,000 for second place; $60,000 for third; $40,000 for fourth and $20,000 for fifth place. The prizes in the Masters category are $60,000, $40,000 and $20,000 respectively.
Trophies will accompany all the cash prizes and registration closes tomorrow. The appliance and furniture giants, Courts Guyana Inc. will be awarding a ‘First Place Courts Finisher’ award in the 3km Run, which is scheduled to run simultaneously on Sunday.
The winning staff will collect $20,000 for their efforts. The Guyana Police Force, First Aid and a host of other international measures will be in place for the race. Banks DIH has partnered with the race under its Tropical Mist Water and Powerade brands.
