Dear Editor,
Guyana should sell off its two State- owned radio stations and enable more radio stations in Guyana. This will help in job creation in the radio market as well as to broaden Democracy in Guyana as more people’s views would be catered for. Radio is an old technology but important medium, as many people still listen to radio on their way to work. Having more radio stations will help with job creation in the media and advertising professions.
In the long term, internet radio is likely to replace traditional radio stations as people will be able to use their cellular phones to hook up to the internet and tune into different internet radio stations from around the world. So keeping the two radio stations State owned is not recommended.
Privatising the two State-owned radio stations and use the money to start a new digital radio station, may be an option. Then, no one would be able to accuse the Government of restricting media freedom.
