The Committee members of Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) recently met at GABA President’s Office, Main Street to select a team to represent Guyana at the Ronald Williams Memorial Games. Kaieteur Sport was informed that this will be the first time Guyana will be competing at the Ronald Williams Memorial Games which is slated for Barbados from November 31 to December 5.
The team to embody Guyana at the games comprise of eleven boxers of which six represented Guyana at the ALBA in Venezuela last July.
The boxers selected by the committee are as follows: Eon Bancroft, Dexter Wray, Richard Williamson, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan, Burt Braithwaithe, Samuel Primo, Stefan Gouveia, Ron Smith, Markember Pierre, Marvin Ageday and Benjamin Henry. Manager of the team: Lennox Daniels, Coach: Terrance Poole, Assistant Coach: James Walcott, Match Referees are Ramona Agard and Keith Campbell.
Both Ageday and Henry are a part of the IV Commonwealth Youth Games 2011 which is being held in the Isle of Mann in the United Kingdom from September 8 to 12. Henry (bantamweight) advanced to the quarter-finals and lost RSC to Canadian Jessie Brown, while Ageday (lightweight) perished 8-4 against Clair Merven of Mauritius in his fight.
President of GABA, Steve Ninvalle, told Kaieteur Sport via phone yesterday that he will be speaking with the Secretary of Barbados Amateur Boxing Association today to negotiate at least two female boxers for the trip since the team only comprises of males boxers.
Ninvalle noted that the Guyana’s female boxers need the exposure and the Ronald Williams Memorial Games would be an ideal game to boost their experience since it is only a hand full of them.
