-as TSU cops top prize in drill competition
Police Commissioner Henry Greene has challenged head of the Tactical Services Unit to establish a female riot unit, with the upcoming National and Regional Elections in mind.
The Commissioner issued the challenge after an impressive performance by the female units on display during the force’s 172nd drill competition, yesterday, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
The Tactical Services Unit and Police Headquarters copped the top prize for male and female respectively and so impressed was the Commissioner that he promoted the instructors on the spot.
The instructors, female Corporal Jones and Corporal Melville, were both elevated to the rank of sergeant.
The Commissioner also doled out cash awards to the various teams, including two scout units, who participated in yesterday’s finals of the competition.
This year marked the first year that the police scouts units took part in the Police Drill Competition, which started in 1992 under the stewardship of former Commissioner Laurie Lewis.
There were no competitions in the years of 2002-2006 during the height of an unprecedented crime wave.
The first winner was the Police Berbice Division.
This year the competition was so keenly contested that it took the three judges, way into darkness to separate the winner from the rest of the pack.
There were many who felt that the Felix Austin Police College, Berbice male unit did enough to secure the top prize, for while they were not too spectacular, their display was mistake-free.
There was no such controversy with regards to the females, with headquarters given the nod much to the acceptance of the large gathering that had assembled on the Tactical Services Unit Drill Square.
From the time the competition commenced with the Special Constabulary female unit, the entire gathering was quickly into it.
Many showed their pleasure at every good move with loud applause and “oohs” and “aahs” for every mistake, which were few and far apart.
Such was the performance that the competition could only attract more interest come next year.
At the end of the day’s event, the commissioner, obviously moved by the discipline and precision of the females on display issued a challenge to have females formed into a riot unit.
The challenge was accepted by the TSU head, Senior Superintendent Clifton Hicken.
The Commissioner highlighted the importance of drill in the Guyana Police Force.
“To produce a policeman who is obedient… The three words are proud, alert and obedient. They say that discipline is the foundation of drill,” Greene stated.
