Still hopeful Berbicians will show up today
By Sean Devers
Chairman of the National junior selection panel Nizamuddeen Drepaul says he is very disappointed that the Berbicians were prevented from attending yesterday’s national under-19 female trial match at the DCC ground but is still hopeful the girls will show up today when two more trial games are held at the same venue.
These matches have been organized by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to select the Guyana female under-19 team to play against the Trinidad and Tobago under-19 ladies at the Guyana National Stadium on September 10 & 11 in ‘double headers’ involving t20 female matches between West Indies and Pakistan.
Drepaul said he informed the Berbice Cricket Board President Keith Foster of the trials but only one young lady from the Ancient County turned up yesterday with some of those who failed to show up explaining that they were told not to attend the trials by a BCB official.
Drepaul said that some other girls have been invited today and stressed that politics should never be allowed to affect the future of our young female cricketers who should realise what a privilege it is to represent their country.
The BCB had also instructed their male players to boycott the t20 national trial game which was used to pick the Guyana side to oppose Trinidad and Tobago at Bourda today.
However all of the senior Berbice players attended resulting in a meeting being scheduled by the BCB for yesterday evening with the players who participated in the match.
The Berbicians in the National squad could not attend that meeting due to duties with the Guyana team at Everest yesterday afternoon. Test pacer Brandon Bess explained that late information resulted in him missing the game, while National t20 opener Richard Ramdeen and former Guyana youth Captain Eugene La Fleur were the only Berbicians who opted to make themselves unavailable for National selection in a show of support for the BCB.
A very senior and respected cricket administrator who has support from the BCB said that, while changes have to be made at the administrative level for Guyana’s cricket to move forward, he was very disappointed in the decision of the BCB to deny their players the opportunity of representing Guyana.
“I have been involved in cricket administration for a very long time and my heart is still in the cricket. While I believe that it will be difficult for some of those in the various factions to co-exist in the same organization, getting the players involved in the politics is very disappointing,” he said.
The former high-ranking official said he would try to encourage the BCB to have the Berbicians attend today’s sessions in the interest of National cricket.
In yesterday’s simulation match, Kavita Yadram and Hema Singh scored 20 each while Katana Mentore and Leana Harris each made 12 as National senior player Akaze Thompson took 2-18.
