The Long awaited and previously postponed Nand Persaud Karibee Rice Knock Out football tournament for teams in Berbice will get underway today with one game at the Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam.
The tournament, which is being organized by the Pistons Football Club, is being sponsored by the Popular Business enterprise to the tune of over $200,000 and will see nine teams participating in the competition which will be called “Karibee Rice Football Tournament 2011”.
The teams expected to participate are Corriverton Links, Cortland, Rose Hall Town and Liverpool of Corentyne, Monedderlust, and Rosignol of West Berbice and Cougars Piston and New Amsterdam United of New Amsterdam.
The tournament will be played on an 11 a side knock out basis and each match will be for 90 minutes duration. At the end of Regulation time if there is no winner, an extra time of 15 minutes will be played, if there is still no winner, penalty kicks will be taken.
If a team fails to turn up for its game it will be fined $20,000. The winning team will receive $100,000 and the Karibee Rice trophy, the second place $50,000 and trophy, while third will collect $30,000and trophy and fourth will receive $20,000. An entrance fee of $3,000 is required.
The first game will bring together Rose Hall Football Club against Courtland Football Club beginning at 15:00 hrs.
