Guyana’s newest West Indian selectee Derwin Christian yesterday smashed an explosive 82 to help DCC join GNIC, GCC and Malteenoes in the semi-finals of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway 50-overs cricket competition.
Playing at the DCC ground, the 28-year-old Christian, selected along with fellow Guyanese Devendra Bishoo and Chris Barnwell to tour England with the West Indies later this month for two t20 Internationals, clobbered nine sixes and two fours before he was eventually bowled by Troy Benn for a swashbuckling 47-ball 82 as DCC made 349 all out in 47.4 overs against Police.
After Andrew Lyght Junior was removed by pacer Trevor Benn for 19 at 48-1, Trevon Griffith, who like Lyght has been selected to represent Guyana against T&T Tuesday and Wednesday at Bourda, played some audacious shots in a half-century partnership with Jaron Byron (38) to push DCC ahead on a flat track.
After Griffith who hit four fours and a six in his 69-ball 58 was removed and Barnwell fell for 46, Christian decimated the lawmen with ferocious hitting while Denver Greaves (35), Omesh Dhanram (24) and Cohen Ismond (21) all chipped in as DCC joined Police and MSC as the teams with 300 plus totals in the competition.
Off-spinner Jason Heyliger (4-59) and leg-spinner Vishal Jaigobin (3-72) were roughed up by DCC who then dismissed Police for 94 in 26.4 overs to win by 255 runs.
National t20 pacer Paul Wintz (2-14) removed Troy Benn (10) and Shameer Fazal who seemed unlucky to be given lbw for a first ball duck as Police slipped to 14-2.
Ryan Rajmangal (35) and Rawle Browne (11) offered some resistance before they were both removed by former Guyana under-19 left-arm unorthodox spinner Totaram Bishun who finished with 3-21.
Police collapsed to 76-9 before a six and a four from last man Rodwayne Wade (12) produced some brief entertainment in a losing effort as former Guyana youth off-spinner Denis Squires was also among the wickets with 3-33.
At Bourda, Transport Sports Club slipped from 57-3 to 87 all out in 29.1 overs despite a 45-run third wicket stand between Charwayne McPherson who hit five fours in his unbeaten 90-ball 40 and Stephan Sampson who made 26 from 35 balls with five fours.
Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan bagged 4-25 and former West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson 3-18 for GCC who galloped to 88-1 off 17.4 overs in reply to win by eight wickets.
Carl Rambarose had ex-Guyana under-19 opener Robin Bacchus (4) caught and bowled at 4-1 but Johnson who struck five fours and two sixes in a 55-ball unbeaten 57 and Ricardo Jadunauth 20, saw GCC to victory.
In the other quarter-final match Ace Warriors became the first of three teams to be dismissed for double-digit totals yesterday when they fell for 91 off 25.3 overs against MSC at Everest.
Former Guyana under-19 pacer Seon Daniels (2-17) removed Victor Bacchus (0) and Levar Douglas (5) to leave Ace Warriors on 16-2, while national players Deon Ferrier (2-17) and Steven Jacobs (2-5) ensured the second division team never recovered in their first game at this level.
Clayon Halley top scored with 23 before he was last out via the run out route with extras making a healthy contribution of 34 to Ace Warriors’ cause.
When MSC replied, Nkossi Barker (24) threw his wicket away with a skied catch to cover off Mortland Ward at 40-1 and Carlos La Rose (13) was bowled by left-arm spinner Abzal Gafoor at 62-2.
But West Indies under-19 batsman Kwame Crosse (31 from 46 balls with two fours) and Danny Narayan, who followed up his undefeated 71 in the last round with 10 not out saw MSC to an easy eight-wicket win.
MSC face DCC and GCC take on GNIC on Saturday in the semi-finals with the winners meeting in the final on Sunday.
