The Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI) has received a US$28,386 grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The signing was held last Wednesday at the Chamber’s offices in Corriverton, Berbice.
The purpose of the aid is for the chamber to address two (2) issues of major concern in Region 6: Underage sexual activity prevention and reduction and the No. 63 Beach public awareness programme to ensure the beach remains a major tourist destination.
The UCCCI is one of three beneficiary organisations under the Gender Equity Programme’s (GEP) Civil Society Programme Area, a cross-cutting component of GEP’s overall project. UCCCI was selected out of 20 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), following a competitive process, to participate in GEP’s Civil Society Enhancement Initiative (CSEI).
This initiative provides support for raising the visibility of CSOs through their participation in decision-making processes at the national, regional and community levels.
As part of the support, UCCCI received a package of training and technical assistance over the past six months to build their capacity.
Attending were the donor representatives, Ms Carol Horning, USAID Mission Director and Mr Dickson Bailey, GEP Chief of Party.
President of UCCCI, Vishnu Doerga, expressed thanks for the monetary grant and also mentioned several other ways in which the UCCCI benefitted from USAID over the past couple of months.
“We sincerely thank the USAID/GEP for the training and technical assistance we have received over the past months to build our capacity. Training was provided in four areas: Advanced Participatory Methods; Leadership and Negotiation; Data Collection, Research and Issue Identification; and Communications Strategy, Development, and Media Tactics. This training was really needed and has already allowed us to operate at a more efficient level”, he said.
The second aspect of the CSEI approach is to issue grants to beneficiary organizations to implement activities using the tools and skills learned during training, to address issues of concern by engaging in consultative processes with stakeholders and decision makers in order to effect positive change.
The grant, Doerga added, would “allow us to implement activities using the tools and skills learned during training to address issues of concern. (By engaging in consultative processes with stakeholders and decision makers in order to effect positive change). The two activities chosen for this project will seek to address two critical areas of concern to our society namely the occurrence of underage sexual activities and the preservation of our only main tourist attraction, the #63 beach”.
