Berbice Captain Assad Fudadin ignored his Board’s call to boycott yesterday National t20 trial match at Bourda and scored an unbeaten 53 from 48 balls four fours and a six.
The match, which was won by Royston Crandon’s X1 over Chris Barnwell’s X1, was used by the National selectors to pick the Guyana team to face T&T in two t20 matches on September 6 & 7 at Bourda.
On a good track in sweltering heat, Crandon’s X1 were asked to bat first and scored 151-5 off their allotted 20 overs with Andrew Lyght Junior top scoring with a robust 42.
Fudadin continued his good recent form but only Guyana’s latest West Indies selectee Derwin Christian and former West Indies under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika, of the other batsmen passed 20 with 21 each as their team were restricted to 145-6 when their overs expired.
After Andrew Lyght, the son of former West Indies ‘B’ opener Andrew Lyght was taken at cover off spinner Devon Clements and former West Indies under-19 Captain Steven Jacobs was run out for 21, Crandon thumped two sixes in 24 while Shemroy Barrington, who hit a six and a four, made 19, while Jonathon Foo finished unbeaten on 17 from 12 balls with two fours.
National left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul had 2-16 from four overs and got support from Clements (1-26) and Kellon Carmichael 1-38.

When Barnwell’s X1 began their reply former West Indies youth opener Trevon Griffith (3) drove Guyana t20 medium pacer Paul Wintz to mid-off at 5-1 in the third over while Chandrika who played for the HPC at the Regional level, was removed by pacer Kevin Ogle for 21 at 32-2.
Robin Bacchus (18) was stumped off Crandon’s off-spin at 67-3 and when Leon Johnson (1) was run out from a direct hit to the non-strikers’ end by Wintz from point, Barnwell’s X1 had slipped to 69-4.
Barnwell hammered a six and a four in 17 before he pulled a short ball from Narsingh Deonarine to long-on at 99-5 and although Christian (21 from 11 balls) clobbered Crandon for two sixes and a four in an over which cost 18, he was yorked by Wintz (2-28) with the first ball of the penultimate over with 26 required from two overs.
The small crowd which included Director of Sports in Guyana Neil Kumar and West Indies leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo who missed the match to attend a ‘Visa meeting’ at the Embassy, saw Jacobs (1-22 from 4) concede just 8 from the final over as his team won by seven runs.
Chairman of selectors Rayon Griffith explained that Brandon Bess, Permaul and Chandrika were unavailable for selection since they had to return to the HPC in Barbados tomorrow.
After the match Lyght and Carmichael were the only players without senior team experience named in the Guyana 13-man squad for next week’s games.
The Guyana team read: Shemroy Barrington, Trevon Griffith, Narsingh Deonarine, Steven Jacobs, Royston Crandon, Chris Barnwell, Jonathon Foo, Derwin Christian, Davendra Bishoo, Paul Wintz, Assad Fudadin, Andrew Lyght Jnr, Kellon Carmichael.
