A major sewerage block in Alberttown has been blamed on hundreds of condoms.
The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said it discovered in excess of 3,000 used condoms at the corner of Sixth and Light Streets, Alberttown, on Wednesday.
GWI said it received several complaints of sewage overflows and a sanitation team sent to investigate discovered an overflowing manhole at Albert Street.
“The sewage was practically gushing,” said GWI’s Sanitation Supervisor Wayne Langford.
“Immediately we noticed a number of articles including clothes, concrete, and a significant amount of condoms amongst the sewage.”
Langford explained that GWI was then required to conduct a lengthy exercise to locate the source of the blockage underground.
“We were fortunate enough to locate the huge blockage below Sixth and Light Streets before sunset. It was then that we noticed an enormous amount of condoms which clogged the system and affected the operations of the sensitive devices used to pump the sewage out of the city.”
The supervisor revealed that the removal of the blockage required more than two hours of work by GWI’s Sanitation team.
“The debris was so large in number that the entire team was called in to remove the massive amount of condoms – my team counted over 3000. Even the residents looking on were stunned to see the amount of condoms found in the blockage. This situation is unacceptable since we have been appealing to residents to desist from flushing anything but human waste through their toilets.”
Langford explained that it is a common occurrence to find large numbers of condoms at city hotels which experience sewage overflow. However the over 3000 condoms found at the Sixth and Light Street blockage is the largest on record.”
Langford highlighted that the sewage overflows which resulted from the consistent flushing of condoms affected a pregnant woman in Albert Street and caused her to become ill. He stated that several elderly persons and children were also affected by the unhygienic conditions.
GWI emphasised that it has consistently educated residents of Georgetown about the damage caused by dumping garbage into the sewerage system via its weekly television broadcast, radio advisories and community outreach programs. However, recently the number of overflows has exacerbated and according to Chief Executive (a.g) Nigel Niles, GWI will seek legal action against all customers found guilty of dumping garbage into the sewerage system.

You mean to tell me they had all that time to count all those condoms, what a task.
well that good work GWI and also we know people practicing safe sex and that a next good thing , but they should dispose in a more better way.Good work hope Albertown will not get flood there like before…
What were they doing in alberttown. LOL
This is a small price to pay to curb HIV infections and other STD’s. Just educate the public or there is another alternative upgrade the sewrage system.
Well at least they are protecting themselves. Less STDs and children they are unable to take care of. 🙂 Just have to teach them how to dispose of it in an eco-friendly manner.
It seems like city dwellers are doing their part in effective birth control and the spread of STD’s.
They can dress up Guyana as much as they could with new buildings, new roads, prado etc.BUT until they fix the infrastructure and attend to vital areas- water, light, irrigation, sewerage they are NOT FOOLING ME!
at least they used condoms
Yummmm If they were flavored condoms maybe it would have smelt better…
Hahaha, seems those residents of the surrounding areas, have learned how to ease their stress in a very healthy and safe way, and in the process caused the workers of GWI to finally do some much needed work . Afterall living in guyana is no easy task
