Dear Editor,
It is not without irony we read the letter in Kaieteur News (Berbice Needs to be represented on the Guyana Cricket Board – 8/27/2011). It is unfortunate that the writer/s chose to hide behind “Name and address Withheld”.
Is this member/s of the BCB trying to make a case for itself or part of its normal MO – hide when in doubt or embellish the truth when the facts no longer seem to fit?
The news that the President is likely to take the advice of Justice Chang and jump in with both feet in the troubles of the GCB is neither surprising nor disappointing – politicians do not like to see vacuums. And ours, it appears, have a particularly fondness for that affliction.
Notwithstanding the recommendation of the WICB and the ICC it appears that the government intends to go ahead with the appointment of an IMC where the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture is expected to play a major role.
In all of this the BCB has already been promised two seats on an IMC – without due pleading. The other BCB complaints are: a) its non-participation in the elections of the GCB should disqualify the elections as null and void; b) the President should ensure that the BCB is adequately represented on the IMC or any GCB in the future (done deal); c) the exclusion of the BCB from the administration of the GCB was “selfish and self-centered”; d) the Berbice Board is “arguably the best run cricket association in Guyana”; e) its ability to select an all-Berbice team with a winning performance for the Jamzone T/20 tournament is a model of its organizational skill and commitment.
A little more than two years ago some of us participated in the formation of the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA).
We subsequently invited the executive of the BCB to a meeting which they duly attended, promising assistance and guidance in our efforts.
At that meeting we specifically requested a copy of the BCB’s constitution which was duly promised but never delivered.
A copy of the constitution of the BCB, recently acquired from the Courts, indicate that the UCCA is a founding member of the BCB yet has never been invited to participate in any of the deliberations of the BCB, except for a recent meeting on 14th August, 2011.
Second, we learnt, at the recent OGM of the BCB that the latter was unable to organize a single first division match for 2011 because of the lack of funds.
However, despite this major failing the BCB went ahead to select representative teams and players when the rules require the former to ensure fairness in the latter.
The lame duck excuse “well, we had to use other criteria”. No need to consult with the Board on the matter – the “select” selection committee vary the rules as it saw fit.
The other more searching questions though: a) Is this the sterling organizational skill of the BCB, to which we are asked to pay penance, unable to organize a single First Division match for the year? b) What other criteria for selection have we found other that the performance of players for selection? and c)
How do new players get a chance to break in the selection process when there are no matches to test their skills?
But the most intriguing question is finances. Here both the Treasurer and the Special Events Officer indicated that sponsors were difficult to find and in fact one person was responsible for the latter.
It became all very clear why the BCB could not organize a single First division match for the year when the Special Events Officer insisted that he was and likely to remain the sole officer responsible for the matter – in the future.
Finally, if Judge Chang’s ruling is correct, i.e. that “the parties before the court are legal nonentities and the court is not the proper forum or avenue for any relief …: how and where does the BCB gets to claim moral high ground? It also is a nonentity.
We are neither surprised nor disappointed. In the absence of any entitlement based on moral and/or legal claims (the good judge called it a “nonentity”) the BCB does what comes to it best: “So the president is urged to ensure that Berbice is properly represented on whatever IMC or new GCB is selected in the future.
Our cricket development depends on the active involvement of this organization”. Thank you, BCB. You do have a fine eye for the soup.
Thank you.
