Guyana going all out to halt a 31 years jinx looking for 4th World Cup victory

When Guyana meet Barbados on Friday at the National Stadium at Providence only one thing will be on the mind of coach Wayne Dover and Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz, April 12, 1980.  For those born after, that was the last time Guyana won a World Cup qualifier.  The then World Cup Squad led by Thomas United legend Earl O-Neal defeated Grenada 3-2 in St. George’s, the encounter against Barbados will be Guyana 21st World Cup Qualifier since 1976.  With only three wins two draws and 15 losses, Friday its time for change.  Let’s look back at Guyana World Cup qualifiers record:
1976 vs Suriname – GCC Bourda – won 2-Nil, Goal Scorers: Vibert Butts and Keith Niles; Lost return fixture 3-Nil, Paramaribo Suriname
1980 vs Grenada – GCC Bourda – won 5-2, goal scorers: Clyde Oiler Watson (2), Gordon Brathwaite, Ashton Taylor, Clyde Wooly Forde; Won return fixture 3-2, St. George’s goal scorers: Clyde Oiler Watson (2) other goal scorer unknown
1980 Lost one Nil to Suriname – GCC Bourda; Lost return fixture 4-Nil, Paramaribo Suriname
1980 Lost one to Cuba in Havana; Lost return fixture 3-Nil Mackenzie Sports Club
1984 Lost one Nil to Suriname Paramaribo; drew return fixture one all, GCC Bourda; goal scorer for Guyana Terrence Archer
1988 lost 4 Nil to Trinidad & Tobago Camp Ayanganna; Lost return fixture one Nil National Stadium Arima
1992 Lost to Suriname 2 – 1, GCC Bourda, goal scorer for Guyana Anthony Stanton; drew return fixture one All, Paramaribo, goal scorer for Guyana Kevin Archer
1996 Lost to Grenada 2-1, GCC Bourda, goal scorer for Guyana Bryan Joseph; Lost return fixture 5 Nil, St George’s Grenada
