In a release from Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport Alfred King, it was disclosed that the government appointed Interim Management Committee chosen to handle cricket until current issues are sorted out has started meeting and some progress has been reported.
King stated, “As was intended for the first meeting the Hon. Minister chaired the meeting and stated that the Ministry and Government was acting on the ruling of the court and for the good of cricket. This introductory meeting was quite productive with discussions and decisions made in respect to composition of the IMC, the head of the IMC, review of cricket boards’ constitution, cricket administration and developing a work plan for cricket development, etc.”
“The Hon. Minister emphasized that the work of the IMC and the process of cricket development can only succeed if there is will and commitment from all involved.”
The next meeting will be on Wednesday September 7.
King also explained that, “Following up on the Ruling of Hon Chief Justice (ag), on August 22, 2011, H.E. President Bharrat Jagdeo met with Hon. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport and members of the cricketing fraternity on August 25, 2011, and then with WICB President in the presence with Hon. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport and West Indies Cricket icon, Clive Lloyd, the Minister of Culture invited representatives from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB), Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the two (2) factions of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) to the first Interim Management Committee (IMC) meeting on Wednesday 31 August 2011 at 10:00 hrs in the Minister’s Secretariat.”
“However, because of EID UL FITR, a few members requested a change of date to facilitate their attendance. The meeting was held on Thursday 1st September 2011 at 10:00 hrs. At the meeting there were representatives from the BCB, and 1 faction of the DCB. While the ECB asked for time to name their representatives and the other faction of the DCB and representatives from the GCB sought clarification on the IMC – TOR.”
Dr. Frank Anthony and team, under the direction of H.E. President Bharrat Jagdeo, are fully focused on bringing some semblance of normalcy to local cricket despite some objections. It is hoped that they achieve the desired results and cricket is once again administrated in a proper way and the necessary changes to the GCB constitution are made to ensure proper management of the game in the future.
