Dear Editor,
This is a matter that I believed should be brought to the attention of the public. My daughter wrote the Caribbean Examinations Council (C.X.C) examinations through Global Technology in May/June, 2011.
She was successful in all five of the subjects she sat and wishes to pursue her studies at the University of Guyana (UG); however, to date, her official result/grade slip has not been made available to her from Global Technology thus preventing her entrance to UG.
This issue derived from an error made by Global Technology during the registration process for the examinations, where students sitting the C.X.C through private institutions have to write a third exam (Paper 3) as an alternative to the School Based Assessments (SBAs), offered through the formal school system.
In this particular case, the third exam was not indicated. Following the discovery of this error, arrangements were made by the local Chief Examining Officer to correct same and have the students write the “Paper 3” in the relevant subject areas.
However, the cost of the error amounted to approximately one million, two hundred thousand Guyanese dollars ($G1.2M), a figure for which a waiver was requested by Global Technology and, from all indications, has not been resolved.
Mr. Editor, apparently without this payment C.X.C is unwilling to release the official grade slips to the students who would have written the respective subjects through this centre.
It is my understanding that this is the cause for the delay in the release of the exam slips; which UG needs to process registration/acceptance of students.
In their quest to assist the students’ entrance to UG, Global Technology-from the official results master sheet provided by the C.X.C – had written letters to UG on the students’ behalf but this was refused.
Mr. Editor, this unfortunate incident — no fault of the students — has prevented my daughter from achieving a timely registration at UG.
Furthermore, part of the issue here is the fact that UG has closed its registration and is now charging a relatively exorbitant fee for late registration. My question therefore is: whose responsibility is it to pay this late registration fee especially when this issue is not the fault of the students?
I was made to understand that this issue, if not resolved soonest, may even cause the total non-entrance of students desirous of pursuing students at UG for this academic year.
I would be grateful for some attention on this issue and an early resolution to same.
