Dear Editor,
The principles of good governance remain the same for all institutions whether it relates to the functioning of one or more universities, or even a country. These are international standards that are not limited to the boundary of one institution or country even if an institution is faced with financial cut backs or limited funding.
The University of Guyana (UG) does not have good governance. When the University of Guyana becomes indecisive about a matter concerning the administration of the university, students are the ones who become victims during the process. If a University is not managed efficiently in a normal state then how can it function effectively under circumstances where there is a financial cut back or limited funding?
Will the University of Guyana continue to depend on the government for financial support when it’s incapable of doing its housekeeping? Perhaps, Mr. Freddie Kissoon should have taken a part-time job for housekeeping at the university and at least do some good for it instead of blaming the wrong people for the University of Guyana’s incapability of efficiently managing its operations.
It is important to say that the University of Guyana is an autonomous body and has the independence to strategically and effectively manage its operations. It is the only higher education institution in Guyana and yet it is not better equipped to compete with other universities outside of Guyana which have to survive in a globalised and modernized world amidst financial constraints.
The government of Guyana has not under-funded the University of Guyana. As a matter of fact, if it was not for the government’s support, for example, through the University of Guyana Loan Agency which gives students an headache because of the unorganized and untimely process of accessing loans, hundreds of students would not have been able to undertake programmes at the university.
It is ridiculous to observe the absurdity and bias of Freddie Kissoon’s inaccurate and unsupported ideas to the public without careful examination of the evidence.
