Sep 01, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
When I read Paul Arsende’s letter “Prior to 1992 Guyanese could not dream of owning a piece of land” KN 27 August 2011, I became instantly confused.
Presumably the brutal inexactitudes contained in this pathetic little letter are aimed at young readers born in or after 1992. But even then the author must also suppose our youth possess a level of ignorance and vacuity which can only be described as disturbing.
In 1971, I bought a plot of land 60 x 100 ft. in Republic Park (Phase 1) for GYD$ 6,000 and built my dream house for GYD$ 34,786. This was a transported freehold property which stands to this day.
We were a close knit ethnically mixed community in Republic Park in those days. Many of us were in our early to mid twenties and many of us pilots. We all owned our own homes.
I mention this to dissuade detractors from suggesting that I was in some way privileged to have owned my own house and land during the Burnham years. Many friends and acquaintances also bought land and built houses in neighbouring Nandy Park and farther along the East Bank at Greenfield Park and New Providence.
As far as I know, the same type of land and home ownership arrangements prevailed in the vast South Ruimveldt, Tucville, Festival City, Lamaha Gardens, Prashad Nagar, Meadowbrook and other areas.
Mr. Arsende, I do not know you but wish to offer a piece of advice that may serve you well. Never propagate misinformation that can easily be disproved or dismantled.
It is quite possible that many of the “ignorant young people” you are hoping to mislead live with their parents or relatives who bought property prior to 1992 and the very houses they live in are living proof that your claim is not just spurious but also fatuous and highly offensive.
We are now entering the so-called silly season as we approach an “historic” election to paraphrase President Obama. Already, I detect a noisome tendency to try and misrepresent even recent history, some of it emanating from leading politicians who should know better and ought to be thoroughly ashamed that their patent lack of performance is forcing them to play hide and seek with the truth.
