Beverage giants Demerara Distillers Limited under its international brand Pepsi has renewed cricket sponsorship of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Pepsi Under-19 Team for the year 2011. The sponsorship package worth $218 000 was the 8th successive time that Pepsi has renewed its support of the club after coming on board in 2004.
Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert foster at the presentation stated that DDL and Pepsi in 2004 replaced GT&T as the Under-19 Team sponsor and over the last seven years, the Pepsi Under-19 has won the Berbice Championship thrice and was the runner-up earlier this year to Albion.
The team since its formation have produced a total of twenty junior national cricketers and over forty-five players for Berbice at all levels. This year three members of the team – Dominic Rikhi, Clinton Pestano and Lloydel Lewis represented Guyana at the Under-19 level, Arif Chan played at the Under-15 level and Shemaine Campbelle is currently with the West Indies female team.
The Pepsi Under-19 team, Foster also disclosed, in 2011 have been involved in eleven community development projects at the cost of $1.5M including donations to school, churches and NGOs and educational scholarships among others.
DDL Regional Manager Mr. Albert Budhoo in handing over the Sponsorship cheque, hailed the relationship between the club and his Company as very successful. He expressed confidence that the relationship would grow stronger in the future and would produce more stars like Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon and Shawn Pereira. Budhoo also pledged his Company’s assistance in the future and also urged the players to remain focused and disciplined.
Vice Captain of the Pepsi Under-19 Team Lloydel Lewis in accepting the sponsorship cheque expressed gratitude to the Management of DDL for its support over the years and pledged on behalf of his teammates to uphold the high tradition the team have set itself in the past. The players, Lewis disclosed were very appreciative of DDL investment into their future and would therefore strive for excellence at all times.
