Investigators on the East Coast of Demerara are now convinced that they are dealing with a clear case of murder with regards to the death of 68-year-old Phulmatie Rami, whose partly nude body was found floating in a trench aback of Cane Grove, Mahaica, on Tuesday night.
A post mortem examination which was performed on the body yesterday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as multiple injuries, confirming suspicions by the family that the woman was murdered.
According to a source, among the multiple injuries sustained by the pensioner were a broken neck and bruises to her back and other parts of her body.
This newspaper was informed that the police have detained a suspect in the matter but it is unclear what has linked the man to the crime.
The post mortem, however, failed to confirm whether Rami was sexually assaulted, as is suspected by both family members and detectives.
The source said that since a physical examination for rape was inconclusive, further tests including swabbing, are being undertaken with a view to determining the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Rami , who resided at 43 Saywah, Cane Grove, was discovered floating in a trench by her nephew and other members of a search party who had combed the backlands of the village after she did not return home on Monday afternoon.
Ramai, a pensioner and fish vendor, left her home around 07:00 hours on Monday for her customary fishing expedition in the Cane Grove backlands.
When she did not return, her relatives became worried and launched a search. They eventually found her lifeless body around 22:00 hours.
Ramai’s fish hook with line, a black skirt and her pink underwear were found about 100 feet on a dam from where her body was found.
