Gov’t says no elections before Nov. 14

–    OAS, CARICOM confirmed as observers

President Bharrat Jagdeo is not expected to call general elections before November 14, Head of the President Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon said yesterday.
November 14 is the earliest date the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has said that it can conduct the elections, Luncheon explained yesterday, confirming what GECOM Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally had said.
Elections are constitutionally due by December 28, 2011.
The Commission was prepared to conduct the polls by mid-October, but that had to be shifted to accommodate a new round of the Claims and Objections period, which allowed more eligible electors to register to get their names on the Final Voters’ List.
According to Luncheon, more than 8,000 persons added their names to the National Register.
Luncheon said that GECOM is reportedly pressing on with the distribution of ID cards for those persons who have been registered.
Meanwhile, Luncheon said that of the organsiations that were invited to observe the elections, the Organisation of American States and the Caribbean Community have so far said they will be fielding a team of observers.
The Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB) is the first local organisation to have been announced as observers of the elections. The EAB intends to field a team of 2,200 observers.
