The last three quarterfinal matches in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Queensway 50-over cricket competition are scheduled for tomorrow in the City with the winners joining GNIC in next Saturday’s semifinal.
Played with the emphasis on developing fast bowlers and a rule mandating that the pacers bowl 20% of the 50 overs, the competition also includes four second division teams who had the option of using two guest players in their side.
After the initial stages of the competition, Police (against Vikings) and Malteenoes (against Third Class) registered 300 plus totals as the second division bowling attacks looked more like fourth division standard on slow and low pitches which have in no way helped the young fast bowlers.
GYO’s Saheed Mohammed, a Cayman Islands International, produced the best bowling performance in the competition so far with 4-7 from 10 overs of off-spin in his team’s victory against GDF, while Malteenoes Sports Club’s (MSC) Danny Narayan flayed an attractive unbeaten 71 against Third Class to register the highest individual total in the competition so far.
When GNIC demolished GYO in the first quarterfinal encounter both teams complained that the pitch at Everest was grossly under-prepared for a game at this level, while the dressing rooms at that facility were locked resulting in both teams being forced to change in the ‘open’ in the Stands.
MSC oppose Ace Warriors at Everest in quarterfinal action tomorrow and it is hoped that the GCA ensures that the players are comfortable in order for them to give of their best on the field at a time when the standard of local cricket is arguable at its lowest.
DCC oppose Police at DCC and Transport Sports Club (TSC) play GCC at Bourda in the other two quarterfinals today.
Semifinals are set for Saturday September 10 with the Final being played on Sunday September 11.
