A Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, family is now left mourning the death of one of its loved ones.
Seventeen-year-old, Hosea Chisholm, who plunged into a trench on Monday afternoon, last, and reportedly almost drowned, died later that same day at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being referred from the Mahaicony Hospital. A post mortem examination is expected to be performed today to determine the cause of death.
The dead teen’s mother, Leonie Braithwaite, described the circumstances leading to his death as “unbelievable”. The woman said she is at a loss as to why her son, who cannot swim, would willingly plunge into a trench.
Surrounded by her other children, Braithwaite tried to fight uncontrollable tears. The grieving mother recalled that her eldest son left home on Monday with his 16-year-old brother, Joel, accompanied by an aunt, to spend the day with some of their relatives at Mahaicony.
Joel Chisholm recalled that he, Hosea, two cousins and a friend went to the backdam to “chase cattle to the front”. He revealed that after his two cousins began swimming, Hosea told him he wanted to swim as well.
Joel related that he tried stopping Hosea, since he knew that his brother did not know how to swim, but his appeals were ignored. Hosea reportedly removed his clothing, and wearing boxer shorts only, plunged into the trench.
The brother emphasized that Hosea was struggling in the water and only his wrists were showing amongst the bubbles. Joel’s inability to swim prevented him from plunging into the trench to save his brother.
It was revealed that Joel’s appeals to his cousins and friend to pull Hosea out of the trench at first were taken as a joke, since Hosea had told them earlier that he knew how to swim.
However, the seriousness and panic in Joel’s voice were heeded and the boys pulled Hosea out of the water and placed him on the dam. Joel recalled that he tried pressing his brother’s chest since he was breathing lightly, to remove any water, but instead blood and rice came out of his nose.
Joel explained that he then left his brother in the care of the other boys and ran to the front to inform his aunt of the situation. When he returned to the backdam, his uncle had already taken Hosea to the Mahaicony Hospital.
According to the young man, Hosea was subsequently referred to GPHC and after he arrived at the hospital, a police officer informed him that his brother was dead.
The boys’ mother emphasized that when she arrived at the GPHC, she noticed Joel sitting on a bench. She asked him what happened to Hosea and he started crying bitterly. The woman noted that immediately she knew that something was definitely wrong and she started crying.
Braithwaite stated that when she saw Hosea, he was lying on a bed in the Accident and Emergency Unit with a lot of tubes attached to his lifeless body.
