As the Saint Sidwell’s Primary School marks its 100th anniversary on Saturday (September 3), the institution’s staff has planned a week of activities, to commemorate this historical feat.
Headmistress of the school, Donna Morgan, told Kaieteur News that there will be a church service at Saint Sidwell’s Anglican Church on Sunday (September 4) to effectively begin the observances. The service begins at 08:30 hrs.
On Monday (September 5), a “reading tent” will be set up in the school’s compound and will be open to students from 13:00hrs to 16:00hrs.
Students from neighbouring schools have been invited to participate in this activity.
Morgan explained that the “reading tent” is a necessary form of assistance since literacy levels in the country have not been of a high standard.
“The reading tent is where children will be able to listen and talk before they can read… meaning that they are interactive sessions. Teachers will read them stories, then they will be asked questions, and finally they will be asked to volunteer to read books aloud to each other,” the Headmistress noted.
This reading tent is a two-day activity and simultaneously next Tuesday (September 6), while this is in session, there will also be a “Photograph exhibition” which will be open for members of the public to view photographs which depict the school’s rich history.
An “Appreciation Ceremony” will be held at the school the following day (Wednesday September 7) where past headteachers and teachers who served at Saint Sidwell’s from earlier days will be honoured. The ceremony begins at 18:00hrs and each one of these distinguished guests will receive tokens of appreciation.
On Thursday, September 8, there will be a “camp fire” outside of the school’s compound, and members of the girl guides and boy scouts have been invited to attend since the school still has “cub scout packs” there.
This newspaper further understands that scores of senior citizens from surrounding churches will be “honoured” on Friday, September 9.
“We would get assistance from some churches where the elders would come and pray for our students especially from churches like the New Covenant Ministries. Senior citizens from the Salvation Army, Salem Church, Archer’s Home and others are expected to be here as well. Other than these, there are eight persons in the Saint Sidwell’s Old Students Association of New York, USA, who will be attending events and four of these will be honoured on September 9,” Morgan explained.
Last, but not least, a “Dinner and Dance” will be held on Saturday, September 10, at Thirst Park, Banks DIH.
Providing entertainment will be the Revolutionary One Man Band and Blue Ribbon and persons will be required to make a contribution of $2,500 if they wish to attend.
All funds will go towards the school where the administration is seeking to purchase water dispensers, a water cooler and other essential items for its students.
