Shawna Gentle and Gavin Lewis capture Nigel’s Junior Tennis 18s Individual Titles
Lopes/Ramrattan win Mixed Doubles Title
As the curtains came down on the 2011 Nigel’s Junior Tennis Classic, Shawna Gentle and Gavin Lewis emerged as the top Junior players as they took home the Girls and Boys 18 titles respectively.

Gentle had a reasonably easy time getting past Krystal Sukra who flattered to deceive after taking out another top player Aruna Ramrattan in straight sets earlier in the tournament. Sukra, as is the case with many junior players could not maintain her mental focus after starting off well. After the first set which ended 6-4, Gentle took advantage on a fading Sukra with some good tennis to complete the straight set win. The final scoreline was 6-4 6-1.
In the Boys 18s final, the rivalry between the top two seeds Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis continued and this time it was Lewis who emerged the winner. Lopes at 14yrs and Lewis at 15yrs have separated themselves from the rest of the juniors with their high level of play and are promising prospects.
Such was their dominance that Lopes lost no games against Khalif Gobin, a player who a couple years ago would have given him a hard time, whilst Lewis had an equally easy time getting past Seanden David-Longe whose game has fallen away after being the better player recently.
The match was back and forth with both players trading groundstrokes in the sweltering heat. Lewis took the first set 6-4 before Lopes rush out to a 5-1 lead in the second before faltering as Lewis mounted a spirited comeback to win the next six games and take the title with the 6-4 7-5 win.
In the Mixed Doubles played at the Non Pariel Courts, Daniel Lopes and Aruna Ramrattan were the better team as they overcame Shawna Gentle/Seanden David-Longe to take home the title in straight sets 6-2 7-5.

Lopes/Ramrattan had earlier defeated Gavin Lewis /Aretta Dey 6-3 6-2 in the semi-finals while Gentle/David-Longe had to pull out all the stops to defeat the compatible doubles pairing of Benedict Sukra/Nicola Ramdyhan in a thrilling match which went right down to the wire.
