Two Lindeners, who have been immobilized their entire lives due to health complications, yesterday received a new lease on life after they were each presented with wheelchairs, compliments of Friends Committed to Caring of North America in collaboration with David Seeram of Chateau Margot, Dr Joseph Haynes and his wife Esther, proprietors of the EA Health and Wellness Centre, and the Angel’s Network in Linden.
The lucky recipients were 40-year-old Yonette Reynolds of 91 Accabre Drive, Linden, and 15-year-old Antone Gomes of West Watooka.
However, only Gomes accompanied by his mother was on hand to personally receive his chair, as Alicia Fingal collected the other chair on behalf of her sister, who could not make it for the presentation.
Both Fingal and Gomes’s mother Althea thanked Dr Haynes for the wheelchairs, saying that it would greatly assist their respective relatives, in getting around.
According to Gomes’s mother, her child has never walked since he was born, and as a result only attended school for a few months.
Reynolds on the other hand, even though she was partially handicapped from her childhood, was able to walk around the house, her sister Alicia reported. However, Reynolds stopped walking completely about ten years ago.
Fingal said that she made a request for the wheelchair about one week ago, and was called by Dr Haynes on Monday and was notified that her request had been approved, and that she should go to the EA Health &Wellness Clinic in Linden to collect the chair.
She noted that she was happy for many reasons, but especially because her sister is the youngest of her siblings, and besides herself, is the only one left in the country.
Fingal said that she opted to remain in Guyana to take care of her sister after their parents died, as she needs constant supervision and assistance.
“This wheelchair would be of great assistance because now I would be able to take her out for a little fresh air regularly without too much hardship,” Fingal remarked happily.
Dr Haynes said that it felt good to be able to contribute to the betterment of persons, especially those with health deficiencies. “I was also very happy to look at the faces of these people that received those chairs, and I felt that this is what we should be doing – touching the lives of people in such a way that can impact positively on their quality of life.”
He pointed out that the two wheelchairs were the first of three hundred-plus that are slated to be given out to persons who need them across the country.
Haynes added that the next distribution would be done in Georgetown, and this would continue as long as there are chairs and persons in need of them.
He is encouraging interested persons to submit a letter from a medical doctor, or anyone that can verify that the individual does indeed need a wheelchair to any EA Health &Wellness branch.
The wheelchairs come fully equipped with pump and spanner for easy maintenance, Haynes pointed out, adding that they were acquired overseas and came ‘disassembled’ but were put together right here.
“We have decided that the wheelchairs are one way of giving back, and between myself the Seeram brothers and the Angel’s Network, we know that somehow we will make a difference’ Haynes asserted. (Enid Joaquin)
