– Irate CAL passengers stranded at CJIA
A large group of furious passengers were yesterday made to wait at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) in great discomfort after a number of flights were cancelled following the effects of Hurricane Irene in the United States.
The passengers became irate with the repeated announcement which indicated that the flights which were expected to depart early yesterday morning had been delayed until last evening.
It was clearly noted that not only Caribbean Airlines, but all aircraft expected to land in New York have been affected, as the John F Kennedy International Airport has been closed due to the inclement weather. As a result, passengers departing New York were also stranded.
Distressed persons awaiting the planes’ arrival told Kaieteur News that they are extremely disgusted as to the way the management of CJIA handled the situation noting that the staff was not equipped to handle the disruption while the accommodation facilities were also deemed as being “of very poor standard”.
“I agree that the storm caused this, but in the US, I think we would’ve handled it better, persons wouldn’t have been forced to stay outside of the Airport,” said one tourist.
However, management at the Airport distanced itself by saying that the passengers who were willing to wait for the flight were placed comfortably in the Airport’s Lounge while Caribbean Airlines offered transportation to those who wanted to return to their respective residences.
Kaieteur News was informed by Caribbean Airlines Limited that they have recently instituted an “eight extra flight system” wide enough to accommodate the persons who were affected by the recent cancellations.
Approximately 1500 passengers had already been transported out of Guyana as of Monday and the remainder were expected to depart by 17:00hrs (5pm) yesterday.
Several passengers told this publication that some of them are currently on leave and are expected by their employers to return today in order to commence work at the beginning of the new month fearing that with the drastic decline in jobs in the US, it is not impossible for them to lose their jobs if they are absent for even one day.
A representative from Caribbean Airlines told this newspaper that the company sincerely apologized to the public for the inconvenience and that they are working on normalizing the situation, but at the same time there was not much that could be done on their part until the storm subsided.
