Dear Editor,
My immediate response to Mr. Christopher Ram’s comment on the GCB’s crisis where I supported the Government’s ‘involvement’ is rooted in the following facts:
1. That I have been involved in cricket administration for over thirty (30) years, investing my time, energy and much sacrifice in the process. I doubt whether one could find another current single individual who has given more and received less for his efforts, even if I say so.
2. Over the past two (2) years there have been well publicised issues of mismanagement, financial improprieties and wrong doings, with the minister of sports attempting to resolve the problem June 2010.
Without going into all the issues and legal acrobatics, experienced it was very obvious that skullduggery was the preferred mechanism being used to implant a Ramsay Ali regime illegally as the GCB Executives.
The fact that the Berbice Cricket Board refused to participate in the AGM and the Bissoondyal Singh’s faction was halted by an order obtained in favour of Mr. Mangal, within the very legal non-entity described by the chief Justice Chang in dismissing Angela’s Haniff’s application as misconceived, leaves us with no doubt as to the sinister intent of those who were behind this entire process.
Never before in the history of GCB Election has there been such a determined attempt to have one Board elect office Bearers of the GCB. It is surprising that Mr. Ram, a professional Accountant and lawyer, cannot apparently relate to order, decency, legality and accountability, factors which have been the root cause of our problems at the GCB recently, and the pillars upon which his professions are based.
The Chief Justice himself said the laissez-faire method of administration must be addressed and recommended that the Ministry of Sports take immediate steps in the short term and legislation in the longer term.
Government’s role in my view is to provide for and facilitate the process so that a level playing field could be established whereby all actors will get a chance to exercise their franchise and vote for an individual of their choice. After which Government will withdraw. What is wrong with that? We have got to look at the bigger picture and not be caught up in our little petty political agendas, to the detriment of our National Game.
With regards to the legal implications, Mr. Ram must debate same with the Chief Justice, for it is certainly outside of my domain, while I reiterate my support for Government’s intervention at this stage.
