Learie Webster of the West Demerara and Rashad Hussain of Mae’s Secondary emerged victorious in the senior and junior categories respectively, when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged the Texaco Bel Air One-day Rapid Chess Tournament at the West Demerara Secondary School Sunday afternoon last.
Webster finished with 7 points after dropping his first match to Glenford Corlette but compensated by winning his remaining matches.
Hussain secured the top spot among the juniors with five wins.
Shiv Nandalall won six games to finish second in the senior category while Irshad Mohamad sealed off the podium spots with five wins, one loss and two draws. Former national senior champion Kriskal Persaud scored five wins and two losses to secure fourth place.
Juniors player, Anthony Drayton secured second place with four wins, two losses and two draws while current National Junior Champion Ron Motilall finished third.
In all 25 players competed in the tournament and the other points standing are: Seniors: Learie Webster (7), Kriskal Persaud (5.5), Roy Sharma, Chino Chung and Pierre Boucher (5), Glenford Corlette 4.
Juniors: Rashad Hussain (5.5), Anthony Drayton (5), Ron and Raan Motilall (4.5 apiece), Saeed Mohameds and Joshua Pedro (4 apiece), Roberto Neto, Haresvera Persaud and Sandip Gonsalves (3.5 each) Kana Khan, Sharriff Ali and Yoganand Persaud (3 each), Davion Mars (2.5) and Ganesh Persaud in the cellar on 2 points.
The tournament was sponsored by TEXACO Bel Air Service Station and the venue approved by the Board of Governors of the West Demerara Secondary school.
The Guyana Chess Federation wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to both entities for making the tournament a success.
