GCA Queensway 50-over cricket
By Sean Devers
Left-arm spinner Leroy Bristol took 4-17 and Shawn DeSouza hit an unbeaten 37 to guide GNIC to an easy eight-wicket win against GYO at Everest yesterday in latest action in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway 50-over knock-out cricket competition.
The 28-year-old Bristol who played at the National youth level in 2000 before representing Berbice at the senior level four years later, removed both openers after GYO had began solidly on a grossly under-prepared track in sweltering heat to help dismiss GYO for 83 in 37.3 overs.

The left-handed DeSouza, who plays domestic cricket in Trinidad, then struck three fours and a six in his unfinished 31-ball innings as GNIC reached 84-2 off 12.4 overs to become the first team to book a semi-final spot.
Abhilash Dookie and national under-15 left-hander Brandon Chanderpaul provided GYO with a sound foundation after they had elected to bat after winning the toss before Dookie, one of several Everest players now representing GYO, was removed by Bristol for 11 at 36-1.
Chanderpaul, the son of former West Indies Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, looked set for another substantial score after topping the Guyana batting in this year’s regional under-15 tournament in Trinidad, when fell to Bristol after making 23 from 49 balls as GYO lost two wickets in the space of a run.
Cayman Islands National Shaheed Mohamed, who was the star of the first round, was the only other batsman to offer resistance before he was bowled by off-spinner Collis Butts at 59-7.
Former Everest and Guyana under-19 pacer Leon Scott tried to attack towards the end of the GYO innings and his unbeaten 17 included two sixes off Butts, the son of former Test Spinner and Chairman of the West Indies selectors Clyde Butts.
Butts had 2-14 from five overs to support Bristol who was almost unplayable on the ‘dust bowl’ of a pitch during his ten overs, while Chairman of the GCB national selectors Rayon Griffith led by example with 1-15 from seven probing overs of medium pace for GNIC.
National under-17 opener Quency Ovid-Richardson (14) and Elton Baker (11) began with all guns blazing before an impetuous shot from Ovid-Richardson was taken at mid-off at 28-1 as Shiveshwar Sankar made the break through.
Off-spinner Mohamed then had Baker caught at short fin-leg two runs later before David Dick and DeSouza saw their team to 78-2 from 11 overs by Lunch.
DeSouza, who dominated the unfinished 54-run third wicket stand, finished the contest with a well executed cover drive while Dick remained unbeaten on eight.
The other three second round matches are scheduled for this weekend with Malteenoes facing Ace Warriors, Transport Sports Club battling GCC and Police playing DCC as the teams battle for the three remaining semi-final spots.
Both teams complained about the poor condition of the pitch and the locked dressing rooms which resulted in the players having to change their clothes in the stands.
