Dey and Campbell capture Nigel’s Junior Tennis 14s titles
Aretta Dey, fresh off winning the ITF Girls 14s title in St Vincent had to battle hard to overcome Afruica Gentle to win the Nigel’s Girls 14 title.
Ten year old Afruica whose sister Shawna is down to compete in the Girls 18 finals, put up a spirited effort and forced the match to a deciding set before being denied the upset win in the deciding tie-break 7-5 . The final score red 4-2, 3-4, 7-5.
Dey had earlier defeated Anneasa Grandison 4-1, 5-3 and Gentle also defeated Grandison 4-2, 0-4, 10-8 (Tie-break) in the round robin stages.
Craig Campbell
In the Boy’s 14s Craig Campbell emerged as the winner after he overcame Desmond Caesar 4-1, 4-2 in the Boys 14 final. Campbell had earlier booked himself in the final after winning all his round- robin matches, while Caesar upset top seed Khalid Gobin 4-1 5-3 and also defeated D. Mohabeer 4-2, 1-4, 10-8 (tie-break) in a hard fought battle at the Non Pariel courts.
In the Boys and Girls 18 action, top players Gavin Lewis, Daniel Lopes, Krystal Sukra and Shawna Gentle won all their matches to set up their finals showdown in the two categories.
There was a surprisingly easy win for Sukra over last Ladies open champion Aruna Ramrattan 6-0, 6-3 while Gavin Lewis had a similar scoreline against Benedict Sukra.
