Dear Editor,
The now profuse letter writer, M. Maxwell, opines in his KNEWS, Wednesday, August 24, 2011 missive that the PPP is only distributing the people’s own lands to Guyanese, and as such, it is not an avenue for political boasting.
For example, he says (and yet again to be very disparaging regarding the PPP/C), that the Government that cuts a dam into a housing scheme, calls it a road after clearing some bush, cannot really boast of its stellar progress on housing.
I really find this amusing. Maxwell states a fact he cannot deny, and yet denies it. Is this possible? This is like saying ‘the road is wet, but it is not wet.’ A big LOL (Laugh Out Loud) to that.
First, I remind readers that prior to 1992 Guyanese could not dream of owning a piece of land, much less building a house. A small plot of land in the ‘dark, dismal, pre 1992 era’ was an evanescent dream. Guyanese back then only hoped and wished.
They acquired property (land and house) only by virtue of inheritance. This is reflected even now, as many ‘yards’ are still in existence, and many ‘Tulsi Houses’ still remain (c.f. House for Mr. Biswas, where one big house accommodated all the siblings and in-laws).
However, today, even single people are becoming owners of properties (land plots and houses). So, based on bare physicalities, Maxwell is exposed. He is not the collective conscience’ and therefore he speaks for no one. I may add that he speaks a lie.
Currently, the PPP/C Government is in the wholesome act of creating a most robust housing policy for which ordinary Guyanese are grateful. They get the house plots, and then they build by virtue of the many ‘soft loans’ that are specifically designed for home builders.
Maybe, it is time the many Maxwells in Guyana, simply travel around and see what is happening in the country. These pessimists can go up the East and West Bank areas. Also, when the squatters were removed from the Lamaha embankment, it was done with great civility and respect. Many of these former squatters would have died in that station. So Mr. Maxwell go and talk to some of them.
In closing, I am proud to declare that I am one of the many Guyanese who are so happy and imbued in positivity. I do not have to unnecessarily worry about ‘if’ and ‘when’ I will own my own home.
I can think of marrying and raising a family now, and right here too. Oh by the way, ask how many Guyanese who have fled this land, and who have lived for years in North America, can truly declare that they own their own property. I now rest my case.
