GCA’s Queensway Cup 50-over cricket
Led by an unbeaten 71 from 23-year-old Danny Narayan Malteenoes Sports Club crushed Third Class by 241 runs at Everest yesterday to advance to the second round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway Cup 50-over knock out cricket competition.
In sultry conditions on a sluggish track and heavy outfield, Malteenoes piled up 320-4 off their 50 overs.
Narayan, who slammed five fours from 68 balls in his unbeaten innings, got support from teenage opener Noksie Baker (58), West Indies under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse (50), Guyana player Dion Ferrier (49)

and Skipper and National player Steven Jacobs (44).
Third Class in reply fell for 79 off 30.2 overs despite a top-score of 12 from Muneshwar Ramsaroop. Kellon Carmichael captured 3-18 for Malteenoes, who now join Police, GYO, GNIC, GCC, DCC, Transport Sports Club and Ace Warriors in the second round.
National all-rounder Dion Ferrier had 2-10 and former Guyana under-19 fast bowler Seon Daniels 2-20 to support Carmichael.
Crosse and the right-handed Baker provided Malteenoes a solid foundation with positive batting before Baker, who played some delightful drives through cover, was caught and bowled by off-spinner Andrew O’Neil in the 24th over at 123-1. His 58 was decorated with six fours and a six and lasted 84 balls.
In the next over from Trevor Hussain, Crosse played across a short ball and was trapped leg before after hitting two sixes and a four in his 54 ball half-century to leave the Thomas Lands side on 124-2.
Jacobs, one of the few players to make their First-Class debuts before playing at the youth level for Guyana, looked to take the initiative from the time he joined the level-headed Narayan and together they took the score to 181 before Jacobs was bowled by Lenny Pancham after striking six fours in his 31-ball 44.
Ferrier, a member of Guyana’s first Regional t20 championship team in 2006, played an array of shots and along with Narayan, who favored the cut and steer behind point, added 117 for the fourth wicket against an innocuous attack. Ray Bryan bowled Ferrier when he was one away from his fifty to leave the score on 298-4 with four overs remaining in the innings.
Demerara all-rounder Carmichael thumped a six in his undefeated 14, while Narayan, who took the bulk of the individual prizes in last year’s Haier Cup, staked an early claim for a repeat performance with the highest score in the first round.
Malteenoes who joined Police (358-8 off 43 overs against Vikings) as teams with 300 totals, struck early in the Third Class innings when Carmichael trapped Imran Hussain (4) leg before at 5-1.

Kevin Pellew struck a free-hit after a no-ball from former National under-19 pacer Seon Daniels for four, but Daniels removed him for eight and Keon Bailey (7) in the space of a run as Third Class slipped to 21-3.
Wickets fell in a heap as only Ramsaroop, who was stumped off a leg-side wide off Ferrier and 14-year-old Shawn Garnett, who made nine before he was bowled by former National under-15 off-spinner Shaquille Williams, offered token resistance.
The last pair of Bryan (5*) and Kevin Christophe (5) added 18 for the last wicket before Jacobs ended the lop-sided contest by trapping Christophe leg before wicket.
Today the second round bowls off with GYO facing GNIC at Everest from 09:30hrs. (Sean Devers)
