Dear Editor,
Today I was given an education that I will never forget. I went to pick up some things that I shipped to Guyana, and I took a friend, Mark, with me who knows a lot of people at the shipping agency. When we first arrived, we didn’t have to join the line because Mark knew the clerk.
Next we were sent to another clerk, Mark knew him as well; so yet again, we didn’t have to wait in line. He sent us to another clerk who had the things that I sent. This clerk immediately gave us our things while many people were still waiting to get theirs. Next, this clerk sent us to a customs officer and you’ve guessed it by now, Mark knew him too.
This customs officer took us to his supervisor to get yet another signature. After that, we went to another cashier; Mark didn’t know the cashier so we waited in line briefly.
Then we went to another clerk and another clerk and finally we were able to leave with our things.
It took us only two hours to get our things. It normally takes me eight hours and a lot of frustration and anger. I am never treated with dignity. I am always disrespected. With Mark’s help, it only cost $5000 in bribes. It didn’t cost us any frustration; we were always treated decently.
Our boxes were never search to see if we had any contraband. Mark, himself, was surprised that no one ever opened it.
I should be happy that I didn’t have to go through any frustration that many people go through to pick up their things.
What bothers me is that I feel what I did was morally wrong. I didn’t play by the rules. I didn’t join the line and waited like everyone else. I paid my bribes.
And I used Mark and his connections, and I took the easy way out to avoid the frustration and the anger I felt many times when shipping and receiving things. When I do the morally right things at the shipping agency, I am treated unfairly.
When I do the morally wrong things, I am treated well. Is the shipping company encouraging people to do morally wrong things to get by?
My dilemma now is do I stick to doing what is right or do I do the wrong things to avoid the frustration and anger at the shipping agency?
