The Annual Hearts of Oak Masters’ Teach them Young football summer camp ended recently with a prize giving ceremony at the Prison Officers Sports Club Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam and the Corriverton Ground.
The event this year was expended to cater for youths from both New Amsterdam and Corriverton. The camp which is in its 14th year was held at the All Saints Scot Church Ground and the Corriverton Ground and began on July 19 and lasted for a period of one month.
The programme was held five days weekly, Monday-Friday from 09:00hrs -13:00 hrs. During the sessions over 210 youths both males and females participated in the sessions which included 145 from New Amsterdam and 65 from Corriverton.
During the camp the youths were taught the finer points of the game which included both theory and practical.
At the practical sessions they were shown the various ways in receiving, passing, shooting, dribbling, and heading, overlapping, Goalkeeping and throwing, Taking on the Thigh and Chest among other points. They were also schooled in Defence, attacking, overlapping and set plays among other tactics.
They also learnt the rules of the game, Discipline, etiquette, good table manners, HIV and AIDS and general education with Physical fitness and fair play being an integral part of the sessions.
During the training sessions the youth were lectured to by officials of the New Amsterdam Prison and were told among other things about the consequences of breaking the law and were each given a token by officers of the prison service.
During the camp 60 pair of Jerseys, 40 trunks, 24 pairs of Football booths 38 pairs of hoses and six pairs of Goalkeeping gloves were presented to the participants. Former national Basketball player and Berbice footballer Sean Semple also donated 87 football jerseys along with other football apparels.
At the end of the camp the youths were presented with certificates while the more outstanding participants were presented with special gifts.
Two pairs of school uniforms were handed over to a number of youngsters to enable them to attend school in the new school term – Shemron Stewart, Tyrone Richards and Kevon Small of Corriverton, while Maila Davis, Stella Morris and Alyssa Mc Almond for females and Delon Alleyne and Onan Glen the males who received from New Amsterdam.
At the end of the camp, participants from both camps engaged each other in a number of exhibition games.
New Amsterdam Mayor, Claude Henry, gave the feature address at the end of the camp in which he congratulated the participants for going the entire course.
He encouraged them to put into practice what they have learnt. He also told them to stay in school and take in their education seriously, stating that education is the key to success and they should not forgo their education for nothing, they should put education first and be good ambassadors.
They were also encouraged to continue training and return to their respective teams and schools and share what they learnt. The course facilitators were Neil Humphrey, Colin and Ikie Bowry, Adrian Ford, Randy Sears, Jamal Joseph, Phillip Carrington, Zahir Moakhan, Orin Ferdinand, Seam Semple, Michael and Vola De Souza, Marlon Lord, Marlon Dorway and Patrick Small.
According to Coordinator, former national player Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey, the main aim of the programme was to have the youths better able to appreciate the rules and regulations and improve their knowledge of the game, improve their overall skills and understand sportsmanship and have a better human relationship with others.
Mr. Humphrey would like to thank among other overseas based Guyanese Sean Semple, Keith Humphrey, Denville Peters, Ashton Ward, Marrica Joseph, Terrence Ferdinand and Colin Ogleton.
