A 30-year-old father of four has been remanded to prison on an allegation of murder. The accused, Andrew Ketwaru, of Tarla Dam, Meten-meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, made an appearance yesterday at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. The matter was heard by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin
It is alleged that on Tuesday, last, August 23rd, Ketwaru killed Radica Ramjattan. The charge is indictable; hence the accused was not required to plea. Ketwaru was unrepresented and during his appearance, was clad in a light grey t-shirt and a pair of blue denim jeans with a pair of slippers.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews asked that an early date be set for the Preliminary Inquiry to begin. Matthews further told the court that in the meantime the police will be seeking further legal advice on the matter.
On Tuesday, last, relatives found Ramjattan lying in the Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg house which the woman and her lover (the accused) had moved into less than a month ago.
A sister of the victim had told this newspaper that Ketwaru, who is said to be a handyman from Sophia, was hugging the body when she and others arrived at the scene. He remained in the house until police arrived to arrest him.
Ramjattan’s relatives all claimed that she was subjected to numerous beatings at the hands of her partner.
