“Gratifying and exhilarating” were the words of President of the Demerara Cricket Club, Alfred Mentore when he reflected on the recent selection of DCC’s and Guyana’s pugnacious batsman and wicketkeeper, Derwin Christian, to the West Indies T20 squad to tour England next month.
Christian’s selection follows on the heels of that of his DCC and national team colleague Christopher Barnwell and the mood at the Queenstown club is one of satisfaction and joy.
Reflecting on his selection Christian, a quiet, unassuming, yet fiercely dedicated cricketer, said that he is has overcome the initial surprise of his call-up and has already begun focusing his mind on giving his best performance when given the opportunity to don the West Indies colours.
“It is an honour for me, my family my club and my country” Christian said.
Commenting on Christian’s selection, Mentore, who is also Vice–President of the Guyana Cricket Board, said that he has no doubt that Christian will perform with competence at the highest level.
Mentore noted that Christian follows in a long line of distinguished players from the DCC to represent the West Indies. “History therefore is on his side and the rich legacy that the club has, provides more than ample reason why the wicketkeeper batsman should be motivated to succeed, and thereby make himself, club and country even more proud”.
According to Mentore, “Christian is yet another great product of DCC to represent the West Indies, following in the footsteps of Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, the late Roy Fredericks, and Roger Harper and, in more recent times, Keith Semple, Travis Dowlin, and Christopher Barnwell.”
The Club’s President extended congratulations to Christian of behalf of the executive and members of the DCC.
He took the opportunity to reiterate that through its emphasis on youth cricket development, the DCC is indeed providing fertile ground for young talented cricketers to hone their skills and go on to achieve great things.
He also called on the other young cricketers in club to seek to emulate the achievements of Christian and Barnwell, and promised even greater commitment and support form the club towards this goal.
