“Fitness is the key to one’s life” is the quote that 53 year old former marathon champion, William France usually uses.
The mid-aged competitor has been participating in races around the world for 15 years now which caused him to be in possession of one of Guyana’s highest National Awards, the Medal of Service.
France has participated in a total of 27 marathons of which 2 were held in Guyana, 21 in the US, 3 in Canada and 2 in Trinidad.
What causes the sportsman to stand out is the fact that he is an amputee (leg) since 1985.
Tomorrow France will be holding his fifth annual ‘walkathon’ from the Two Brothers Gas Station at Eccles to the Mocha Road Head on the East Bank Demerara.
The walk is usually attended by members of France’s Differently Able Athletic Club and supporters from the Mocha Arcadia Community.
The athlete usually present tokens to the youngest and oldest participants and first, second and third place winners, among others.
France disclosed that he is preparing for a marathon in New York scheduled for November. He added that in order to reduce 8 pounds for that race, he usually walks 25 miles per day (Mocha Housing Scheme to the Demerara Harbour Bridge).
France is in possession of several championship trophies including that of the President and Prime Minister.
Some of his main supporters are Diamond Mineral Water, the Ministry of Health, Nigel’s Supermarket, Ramchand Auto Sales, Trophy Stall and Two Brothers Gas Station among many others.
