Police are still questioning a man who they believe murdered Donna Lakeram at Semang, Issano, last Tuesday.
The man was arrested soon after police at Issano responded to a report of the woman’s nude body being found near a mining camp she shared with her reputed husband, a dredge owner called ‘Yellow Man’.
The woman’s reputed husband, who was not in the camp at the time of the incident, positively identified her body yesterday at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
Kaieteur News understands that the dredge owner had advised Lakeram that for her own safety, she should sleep at another nearby camp where there were other females and then return to her camp in the day.
It is believed that after leaving the nearby camp early Tuesday morning, Lakeram, who hails from Second Avenue, Bartica, was followed and attacked by the suspect in custody.
Investigators are awaiting the results of a post mortem to determine the cause of her death, as well as if she was raped.
Police in a press release on Wednesday had indicated that Lakeram was reportedly stabbed and strangled.
Police said they received the timely report about the incident, which they said speaks volumes of the improved communication network in the interior and the confidence that persons there have in the Force.
A team of investigators visited the area where the incident occurred and are expected to have gathered enough information to institute charges.
