Dear Editor,
The recent move by the President of Guyana and the Home Affairs Minister to reach youth and drivers in Guyana to deal with the ever increasing traffic nuisance is welcomed, but has me thinking if it’s an election gimmick or if they are really serious.
It seems to me that road accidents take more lives than execution style killings in Guyana, although, people don’t seem to take it seriously and Government doesn’t seem bothered by this phenomena unless there is big public outcry. There are a lot of issues to deal with in traffic that could help avoid accidents, and some preventative measures that should be supported by government but sadly these have not materialized over the years.
Any driver driving in Guyana can be heard complaining of vehicles not stopping at a junction or blaming each other when an accident happens. Now, throughout this country, for a long time, signs showing one-way streets, where to overtake, speed limits etc. have ceased to exist and no one talks of restoring them. I strongly believe that if these signs are there, accidents can be greatly reduced.
Finally, Mr. Editor, I wholeheartedly support Mr. Sunil Singh’s letter “The issuing of drivers’ licenses should be removed from the purview of the police” in yesterday’s Stabroek News, because, again, I believe that we are not getting service from the Guyana Police Force. Only evidence of corruption and victimization and it seems as if they have too many issues to deal with. This causes our roadways to become a killing field by reckless and unqualified drivers who obtain their licenses through questionable means.
