A local businessman and another man were arrested and questioned in relation to last week’s kidnapping of a Brazilian diamond dealer.
According to reports, the businessman who hails from the East Bank of Demerara was arrested on Tuesday, questioned about his alleged involvement in the plot, and subsequently released on station bail. The other person was also arrested, questioned and released.
This was confirmed by Crime Chief Seelall Persaud when contacted.
Last week Tuesday morning, Brazilian diamond dealer Sergio Mattos was found on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, hours after he was kidnapped. According to initial reports, the man was bundled into a car by four men on Stone Avenue, Campbellville, just after midnight. At the time the man was reportedly visiting the home of a female acquaintance.
Mattos, who is the proprietor of Pure Diamond, had his licenced firearm taken away and he was forced to make arrangements for a ransom to be paid. However, while preparations were being made for the money to be handed over to the abductors, the police were tipped off and a search was launched for the businessman.
He was found on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway by an off-duty police rank who was in a passing minibus. Mattos was found with his hands and feet bound and with bruises about his body.
