Local actress and teacher by profession 37-year-old Shelly Bancroft who was a cast member in the comedy show ‘Nothing to laugh about’ has died. Bancroft who was a Senior Mistress at Queenstown Secondary School passed away around 01:00 hours yesterday at the Caribbean Heart Institute.
The dead woman’s father Noel Bancroft told this publication that his daughter’s health took a turn for the worse following a surgery to replace a damaged heart valve. The surgery was done on April 6 at the Caribbean Hearth Institute.
Mr. Bancroft said it was only after the surgery that the complications started and further medical examination revealed that another valve was damaged and the one that was supposedly replaced was not sealed properly.
“The operation was no good they killed my daughter,” Bancroft stated.
Recounting his last days with his daughter, Mr. Bancroft said Shelly was rushed to the hospital on Sunday evening last and was on life support ever since. He added that after the surgery his family spent close to $3M in medication while another $2M was spent to have the surgery done. The man said after his daughter’s condition became worse following the surgery, she was examined by another doctor who informed them that the surgery was not properly done.
“The doctor said that the valve was not sealed properly and it was leaking.”
According to Bancroft, after the surgery his daughter developed complications ranging from kidney failure to a swollen liver and an abscess where the incision was made for the surgery. The grieving father said he will not let the matter slip through the cracks since he wants answers for his daughter’s death.
Meanwhile, Shelly’s death has come as a severe blow to the local theatrical fraternity as her fellow actors are still in disbelief and shock.
Linden ‘Jumbie’ Jones when contacted said he was totally shaken up by the passing, noting that Shelly was always a pleasant person who had a great sense of humour. Similar sentiments were expressed by another actor/comedian Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine.
Shelly last made an appearance on stage in March in the ‘Nothing to Laugh about’ stage show. That show was held over in order to raise funds for her $2M surgery.
