The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) on Monday, last, opened its reconstructed office at Corriverton, Berbice, which it is believed will significantly improve service in that region.
The one-flat office which is situated at Lot 8 Springlands, Corriverton, Corentyne, was reconstructed at a cost of $69M. It is a state-of-the-art building, which will cater for all the different aspects of the NIS’ operations, including Medical, Inspectorate and General Office.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh commended the NIS for its foresight. He stated that Corriverton is a booming town and such provision must be made for expansion of business.
He stated that government has always been concerned about the welfare of citizens, and the NIS is a striving Social Security organization, and as such the Government has a commitment to invest. He however emphasized the need for improvement in certain areas such as benefits and payments.
The minister called for speedier payments, the regularization of contribution records, and stressed the importance of reducing waiting time.
Also speaking at the ceremony was General Manager of the NIS, Doreen Nelson, who gave her commitment to ensuring that contributors will have access to quality and speedy service. She also gave a brief history of the area office.
The NIS office in Corriverton was established in 1989 when the building was purchased. The edifice subsequently deteriorated since it was over 80 years old and the decision was taken to reconstruct a building including a manager’s quarters. The building is fully air conditioned and complete with a ramp for differently-able persons to have access to the building. The reconstruction began in July 2010.
Last Monday’s activity was chaired by Area Manager Michael Patterson who stated that it was a joyous and momentous occasion for NIS to witness the reconstruction of such an important office at the thriving border town. He stated that the investment showed the organization’s commitment to improving and maintaining quality service delivery to the valued customers.
Patterson stated that the survival of the entity over the years has not been without challenges and called on all to “care the institution”. The office serves the areas from Number 43 village on the Corentyne to Molsen Creek and also oversees the riverain communities of Orealla and Siparuta.
It services some 130 active employers and over 2,850 workers, most of whom are from the GuySuCo Skeldon Estate.
Among those present at the ceremony were Chairman Dr. Roger Luncheon, other Senior Managers, and Members of the NIS board, as well as numerous business personalities from both the public and private sectors.
