369 road signs for Linden-Lethem stretch

Three hundred and sixty-six (369) road signs will soon be installed along the Linden to Lethem stretch to guide travelers, says Nigel Erskine, Traffic/ Road Safety Engineer of the Public Works Ministry.
The contract valued at $10.8M was signed by the contractor, Designs Perspectives, on July 20, 2011. The project duration is three months. The signs will be installed from Linden to Lethem.
Erskine added that curve signs, speed limits, chevron signs, and narrow bridge warning signs will be installed by next month. He noted that currently the contractor is sourcing the signs from overseas.
Erskine stated that the signs are being installed to make the Linden to Lethem road more user friendly, they are safety measures to ensure safe traffic along the corridor.
With the expanding mining sector and other investment opportunities in the hinterland areas including trade with Brazil, many persons are traversing the stretch, Erskine noted.
It was noted that previously the Ministry and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission installed several road signs along the stretch.
Erskine recounted that in 2009 the first phase of the project was completed with the erection of 32 ‘dangerous curve’, 32 ‘narrow bridge’, and several ‘do not pass’ bilingual (English and Portuguese) signs from Annai to Lethem.
He added that in 2010, the second phase of the signage project saw the installation of 172 signs from Wisroc to Lethem.
