The exploits of great Indian cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar’s and Mahendra Dhoni among others are a joy to behold and have established that country as one of the great cricketing nations. Hardly anyone would have thought that that Asian country is also a very important member of FIFA, the world governing football body.
This reality was further strengthened when the media was summoned to a press conference at the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Hadfield Street Sports Club to welcome an Indian football team to these shores to compete in a highly anticipated match against the Golden Jaguars tomorrow evening at the National Stadium Providence.
Instead of the above mentioned stars, pundits will be entertained by strikers the likes of Sunil Chettri, Je Je Lalpekhula and Sushil Singh among others. The action will get underway at 17:00hrs when the Topp XX FC faces off against Pele FC and shortly afterwards the feature attraction will get underway.
The Indian principals were present at the press conference when Chief Executive Officer (GT&T) Yog Mahadeo extended to them a hearty welcome to Guyana. He underlined the spirit of camaraderie shared among the various principals but warned the Indians that the locals are all set to cart off the honours. “We are aware of your exploits on the cricket field but this is a different ball game,” Mr. Mahadeo quipped.
Acting President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Frankie Wilson officially welcomed the Indians to Guyana. He also echoed the sentiments of Mr. Mahadeo, “The local team will be going for the win but we must enforce the point that the outcome will not rupture the camaraderie shared among us,” he said. “To this extent I trust that even after the game has ended we could collaborate and initiate discussions on future relations even beyond the field,” concluded Mr. Wilson.
Meanwhile, coach of the visiting team, Armando Coolaca said that even though he envisages a win, he views the tournament as an avenue to strengthen relations with his local counterparts. “It is my hope that this tournament enhances the friendly ties between us and open doors for future endeavours,” stressed the Indian manager.
GT&T was also magnanimous in their support and distributed ‘Shango’ mobile phones to each of the members of the Indian team.
Other members of the Indian management include Assistant coach, Savio Madeira and manager, Mandar Tammane. The Golden Jags will be coached by Mr. Jamaal Shabazz.
