…but wants to have final say on representative
The main sugar workers’ union, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) says it stands ready to be part of the board of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) but wants to have the final say on its representative.
GAWU has been criticised in the past for not taking a more proactive approach by sitting on the board of the state-owned sugar agency.
With complaints that it was denied critical information, the union made it clear yesterday that it had been offered the opportunity to be an integral part of the process, but had declined.
With one newspaper contending that (the union being denied information, etc.) and with similar statements leveled against the union by some media houses and letter writers, GAWU said it “wishes to advise that such contention is a downright fabrication.”
In a release, the union stressed that if ever there is such a time that it becomes a part of GuySuCo’s board, it “would certainly participate to represent the genuine interests of sugar workers and the country. However, it must be made pellucid that the union will not countenance anyone selecting its nominee whose selection must solely reside with the union.”
According to the union, it is a responsible and committed stakeholder in the future of the sugar industry and will lend its expertise and commitment to workers’ satisfaction in the deliberations by GuySuCo’s board.
“GAWU is also cognizant of the fact that the myriad challenges is not of the union’s making, but will nevertheless be a team player on the Board advising on the wisdom of policies, programs and management.”
Over recent years, the relationship between GuySuCo and the union had become strained amidst lower production and a huge cut of 37% by its largest customer in Europe. There were numerous strikes also during the last few years.
