GCA’s Queensway 50-over cricket
– Police also in winners’ row
By Sean Devers
In sweltering heat in Guyana’s Capitol yesterday, All-Rounder Saheed Mohamed spearheaded GYO to a four-wicket victory against GDF at DCC, while host Police demolished Vikings by 233 runs in first round action of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway 50-overs cricket competition.
Police and GYO now join GCC in the second round, while the winners of today’s matches between UG and Transport at DCC and Malteenoes and Third Class at Police will also advance in the knock-out competition.
At DCC on a spin friendly track, Mohamed who represented the Cayman Islands in the Stanford t20 competition, befuddled the Soldiers with a dose of big spinning off-breaks and quicker balls to finish with 4-5 from seven overs as GDF slumped from 95-2 to 121 all out in 28 overs.
The burly right-hander then returned with an unbeaten 46 with five fours to help a new-look GYO to 124-6 off 34 overs for a comfortable victory.
National Opener Shemroy (22) and Paul Castello (15) began with all guns blazing but once both openers fell with the score 45 inside 6 overs and National under-19 Wicketkeeper Kevin Boodie, who hit five fours in 30, departed at 95-3 in the 17th over, the Army ran out of ammunition as Mohamed looked almost unplayable.

Barrington touched a good delivery which left him from former Guyana under-19 pacer Leon Scott to the Keeper but most of the other wickets fell due to a combination of clever bowling and an alarmingly poor mental approach to playing spin bowling.
After Boodie’s demise, caught at deep mid wicket off Abdul Rahim, the 35-year-old Mohamed bowled teenager Mark Rhobe (5) and Ameer Khan (1) in quick succession to leave the score on 112-5.
Three wickets, including that of Markus Watkins (one of the few batsmen willing to use his feet in his 26) fell at 118 as none of the last seven batsmen passed five and eight GDF wickets tumbled for 26 runs.
Shiveshwar Sankar supported Mohamed with 2-3 for GYO who lost opener Abilash Dookie (7) when, after lofting off-spinner Niketio Nester for six in the second over, he tried to hit a long-hop too hard and skied a catch to cover as Nester made the break through with one of the worst balls seen at this level.
Barbados based Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) First-Class pacer Gilford Moore, in his first local game in four years, bowled very well and struck Vijay Gangaram on his head with a short ball after a rain delay had given GDF some hope of avoiding defeat.
Moore was surprisingly not used for a second spell although Skipper Barrington bowled 10 overs of uncomplicated off-spin on the trot and Boodie’s work behind the stumps was as ragged as it was during this year’s regional under-19 tournament.

Batting all-rounder Randy Lindore prized out three wickets with his off-spin including Kumar Singh (21) who added 54 for the third wicket with Mohamed and although former National youth left-arm spinner Denis Legay troubled the batsmen the total was always going to be difficult to depend.
Mohamed finished the game in style with three fours off Lindore, whose five overs cost 24 runs.
At Eve Leary, the Cops registered the highest Total in the competition (309-8 off 43 overs) before rain ended their innings prematurely as Randy Knights, who ht three
boundaries in his undefeated 49 and Vishal Jaigobin (46) added 90 for the eight wicket with entertaining batting on a slow track.
Police never allowed the Vickings batsmen to escape and they were bundled out for 79 in 19.3 overs as only Guest player Trevon France (17) and Abdool Kumar (16) reached double figures.
Essequibo fast bowler Trevor Benn grabbed 3-22 and got support from Jason Heyliger (2-4) and Rodwayne Warde (2-23).
Earlier, Vickanand Dalloo got rid of Ryan Rajmangal (13) at 26-1 but Troy Benn (17) and Rawle Browne (13) revived the position before Kenny Thomas (2-31) removed Browne at 55-2.
Thomas sent Benn on his way and at 62-3 and Vikings, making their debut at this level was in the fight. However, Heyliger (38) and Parnell London (46) added 103 for the fourth wicket before Heyliger fell to Reon Sumair at 158-4.
London was bowled by France (3-51) who also bowled Ameer Mohamed (25) and when without addition to the score he trapped Trevor Benn leg before for a duck, Police were 209-7.
But Knights and Jaigobin attacked with disdain before Shane Bacchus bowled Jaigobin, who dumped Danish Dyal for consecutive sixes. Rain then prevented Vickings from chasing a larger total.
