Tournament hailed as a tremendous success

There are signs that the thread on the fabric of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), Guyana’s best run cricket board, is beginning to unravel just a bit in recent times. But on the field their cricket remains strong.
When a team is doing well issues are sometimes forgotten and fans are galvanized as a potent support force.
This is the case with Berbice cricket as thousands journeyed to the Guyana National Stadium last Sunday night to see their team become the first ever Jam Zone Masters’ Cup champions

Without any overseas Internationals and urged on by a sell-out crowd, Berbcie beat the Gizmos & Gadgets Georgetown Pitbulls in the final to maintain their supremacy in t20 cricket.
The Royston Crandon led Berbice side, which included Test leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and t20 hitter Jonathon Foo, won the $2 Million first prize while the Pitbulls had to settle for the runner-up prize of $1Million.
The Hits & Jams Super Stars, with Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo in their line-up, beat New Line Cavaliers in the third place play-off to clinch the $400,000 third prize.
The teams were presented with their prize money at the Georgetown Club on Thursday evening at the gala Jam Zone ‘Black Tie affair’ which included dinner and an auction for charity.
Berbice Manager Mark Lyte, his Georgetown counterpart Shawn Massiah and West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson who represented the Hits & Jams side collected their prize money from the coordinator of the Jam Zone Masters’ Cup, International Cricket Broadcaster Sean Devers.
Devers told the gathering, which included the 11 delegates vying for the prestigious Miss Jam Zone International title, that the two-day competition was a tremendous success adding that the final attracted one of the biggest crowds to watch a cricket match anywhere in the region in recent times.
Devers lauded Rawle and Kerwin and the entire Hits & Jams Entertainment family for their vision in including cricket in this year’s Jam Zone Summer break and thanked all those, including the events premier sponsor GT&T and the Guyana Government for supporting the Jam Zone Masters Cup.
Devers, a former National cricketer, said everyone benefited from the competition.
“The fans, the country’s image as a sporting tourism destination, the hotel industry, the local players who work hard and play for little financial rewards during local tournaments although they are the most important ingredient in any successful cricket competition…everyone got something from this. Even the young players got did not play should benefit, since some of the $1.5 Million given to the Guyana Cricket Board should be used to help Guyana’s cricket development in some way,” Devers opined.
Devers, who represented Berbice at the senior Inter-County level congratulated the Berbice team for showing faith in their local players and proving that Guyana has good enough talent to succeed even against the best in the West Indies. The Jam Zone Masters’ Cup is expected to be an annual feature.
