Chung wins Fourth CRTTF Women’s Singles title
-Guyana gets thumbs up for hosting tournament

Trinidad and Tobago’s French-based table tennis star, Rheann Chung won her fourth Caribbean and Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Women’s Singles title yesterday afternoon, and Guyana was given thumbs up for hosting the 2011 tournament.

7-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 13-11 and 12-10 in a game that had a partially packed Cliff Anderson Sports Hall shouting in appreciation for the quality of the game.
Chung had defeated Guyana’s Trenace Lowe 4-1 in the semi-final stage when Brito whipped her country-woman, Johenny Valdez by a similar margin. Chung won her first Caribbean singles title in 2004 when Trinidad hosted; she won again in 2008 in Jamaica then defended in 2009 in French Guiana.
It was definitely a ‘changing of the guard’ in the Men’s Singles final when Trinidad’s most outstanding table tennis player in the history of the country, Dexter St. Louis lost 15-13, 9-11, 5-11, 7-11 and 8-11 to 22-year-old, Juan Vila Jr.
Following the two exciting and major showdowns, the venue was transformed to accommodate the closing ceremony for the tournament. All regional stakeholders agreed that the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) hosted an excellent championship.
President of CRTTF, Juan Vila Sr. conferred a gold medal of performance on GTTA President, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, stating that it will be very difficult for the Dominican Republic to top the exceptional organisation of the 2011 championship.
“We would like to give our highest gratitude to the GTTA for their extraordinary organisation of the 2011 championships. It would be very difficult for us to do the same next year,” he said. The 2012 Caribbean Table Tennis Senior Championship will be held in the Dominican Republic.
Vila, who is also the President of the Dominican Republic Table Tennis Federation, said that he will work very hard to ensure that the Caribbean countries enjoy the similar standards that GTTA has set in hosting the just concluded event.
The visiting International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Umpires Instructor, Lai Fatt, said that the order at the tournament was second to none he had witnessed worldwide before. He said that the standard of the competition was high and it was well organised.
“I didn’t have much work to do to bring the referees up to ITTF standards,” Fatt noted, adding it was one of the areas of concern before arriving in Guyana. However, he observed that after being in Guyana for tournament, most of the umpires were well trained.
Greene thanked the officials for their commendation and the business community for supporting the event. He said that notwithstanding the performance of Guyana, most of the players were in with chances to win, which meant that they were competitive throughout.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony added that Guyana must learn from the experience of playing against the best in the Caribbean and go back to the drawing board seeking to improve. He said he will work with the GTTA to get infrastructure in place.
