– Locals need win to progress
Just as she had done in the opening game against Guyana, Curacao’s goalkeeper Rowina Bernadino made another blunder which proved decisive in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Anguilla yesterday, at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara.
The result means that Curacao are now out of contention in the CFU Women’s Under-17 qualifiers and tomorrow’s game between Anguilla and Guyana at the same venue will decide which one of the two teams advance to the next round of the competition.
Anguilla took the lead in the second half of the game after the expulsion of Shade Desir in the 37th minute, a key player for Curacao. It came through Coleen Johnson, who hammered the ball past Bernadino in the 56th minute to net the first goal for her team.
Eight minutes after Curacao levelled the scores, when Ruayna Stroop’s attempt on goal ricocheted off Shaniqua Hodge hands and trickled over the goal line.
After that it was a mid-field battle with the Anguillans looking the better and more conditioned and should have added a few more goals had it not been for solid goalkeeping by Bernadino.

Meanwhile, Curacao’s main threat Samantha Statia was not given the room to produce her magic and was eventually summoned into the defence which was looking real tired after the strong Atlantic breeze had taken its toll. The Anguillans continued their relentless assault on the Curacao backline and got their reward through Juneicia Romney, whose shot flew past Bernadino in the 70th minute.
Many felt that she should have saved it easily, but somehow did not and it proved to be a crucial mistake since no other goals were scored in the game, before the final whistle sounded, handing the Anguillans a well deserved win and are now top of the points table.
They now challenge hosts Guyana for the right to move into the next stage.
